If heresy is the progenitor of innovation, then conformity is the hobgoblin of mediocrity.

Schools of thought legitimize themselves by recruiting acolytes who preach ?the truth.? The more followers recruited, the more legitimate the philosophy. A wise professor once said, "All a teacher ever does is create paler copies of himself." Who decides what is and what isn't? By what authority?

Perhaps, as some assert, the difference between a skilled craftsman and an artist is talent. But the nature and qualitative measurement of talent is elusive. Both artist and craftsman know intimately their tools, materials, audiences, and all the other ingredients and techniques needed to produce a valued result. Maybe, the difference is the artist has the ability to rearrange, reconfigure, all the components, techniques, application of tools and media in a new, fresh, and innovative way, and still produce a valued result. The insight that drives the creation of something unique is, perhaps, talent, and thus the characteristic of an artist. The result is not random, but disciplined application of the craftsman's techniques, tools, and media, and with insight, control and reasoned design, applies them, rearranges them, for that which is fresh and compelling.
